Poker Hand Ranking

Playing poker is a lot of fun, but for those who aren't familiar with how the different hands rank, I have written this basic guide. Note that I refer to playing poker with no wild cards and the ace considered as either HIGH or LOW.

The Straight Flush

The straight flush is the best possible natural hand you can be dealt. A straight flush is simply 5 cards dealt in order that are all the same suit. Like a regular straight, you can have an ace hi or low, but a straight can never go around the world or connect like K-A-2-3-4 which will not work. And the hand ending with the ace high is called the Royal flush and is the best possible hand.

Four of a Kind

The four of a kind is exactly that, four cards of the same rank. Say if you 4 fours in you hand, and another player also had four cards of the same rank in their hand then the player with the higher rank would win.

Full House

A full house beats a flush and a straight and is signified by holding a three of a kind and a pair. Ties in a full house are broken by the three of a kind first and then by the pair.

Flush

A flush is when you hold 5 cards of the same suit in your hand; this hand beats straights and three of a kind.

Straight

The straight, which beats the 3 of a kind, is when you have five cards regardless of suit in order. It can be ace hi or low, when there is a tie it is always the highest straight that wins.

Three of a Kind

A three of a kind must be three cards of the same rank with your extra cards not matching in rank otherwise it would be a full house. Also highest three of a kind wins. This beats two pairs.

Two Pairs

Two pair is when you have two separate pairs and an odd 5th card. Two pair will beat one pair and is the second lowest winning hand.

A Pair

A pair is two cards of the same rank and is the lowest winning hand over having nothing in your hand. If another player has a pair, then it is the highest pair that wins.
